A vast majority of piping systems are made up of just a few different types of fittings to route fluid from one place to another. These familiar items include straight pipe, tees, valves, unions, and 90° elbows. As a pipe insulation manufacturer, offering these items to our customers is basically a fundamental requirement. But what about other, less common fittings? Well, we think those are important too.

Not only do we place an importance in providing our customers with the ability to insulate as much of their systems as possible, but we take a great deal of pride in building insulation covers that fit well while maintaining a professionally installed and finished appearance. Here are just a few examples of items we have made custom insulation covers for recently:

We had a customer inquire if we would be able to make a 3 foot by 3 foot blanket to temperarily place on hot process piping and equipment while workers perform maintenance. The process piping and equipment would be at a maximum temperature of 400°F, so we needed to knock that down to a reasonable temperature for the employees to keep from getting burned. Typically we shoot for a maximum surface temperature of 140°F for burn protection, and that was our target here as well.

We were able to provide our customer with two options to decide on:

Option A: Lightweight, thinner, but more expensive. Using the same materials as our SpeedWrap ES pipe insulation product, we were able to knock the worst case surface temperature down to about 137°F (assuming 75°F ambient and 1/2 mph wind speed).

Option B: Cheaper, but thicker and heavier. Using a needled fiberglass material, we were able to offer a 30% less expensive option at the cost of weight and bulk. This solution will keep the surface temp up to 10 degrees cooler at the highest process temperatures, but either option meets our surface temperature goal.

Small samples of each option for the customer to decide on. Option A is on the bottom left, and Option B on the top right.

Depending on budget and preference the customer now has the option of choosing between two products that meet the main goal of protecting employees from burn hazards.

The article also mentions SpeedWrap, saying that “Speedwrap.com has one of the better hot water pipe insulators in the field. Using less insulation while maintaining its insulating properties, Speedwrap combines attractive Velcro covers with formfitting designs for individual areas of pipe.
